I've seen a couple of videos on the Lionel HO Polar Express, and at first glance it looks like an ideal Christmas present for a grandson. However, all the videos I've seen mention (but don't make a big deal about) the locomotive halting at a certain low speed. I would hate to give a gift that doesn't work well, so I have a question.

Is the halting something Lionel has fixed, or is it still there? Does it only happen with their hand held controller, or does it also happen on DCC?

If you have the set, is it something you would give to a beginner?

Thanks for advice.

I don’t have the h o set , but I do have there ready to run set under our Christmas tree. I will say it is perfect for that!
It only needs to run when my daughter is around to play with it. Which at first is for the day it is put up. After that she gets board with it.
It will only run mid to high good when you try to slow it down to run low to mid. It will stall out. Now granted it does have 5 cars on it not just the 2 it can with. So it might have something to do with it.

As for the h o scale I do have a polar express in that size, but I built it myself with a Bachman 1225 Pete Marquette. I just did all the decals myself & used rivarossi heavy pullmans. With the polar express colors & decals
