Hello,
I just bought a Lionel NY Central Flyer at a local hobby shop. I have always had a train under the tree as a kid and wanted to start this tradition with my 1yr old this Christmas. The 1st night I ran the train everything worked fine. Now the whistle will go off by it self if I go past 1/2 throttle and if I put the train in neutral and put the throttle to full it will blast the whistle none stop.
The directions that came with it mentioned if you hit the whistle or bell button right away after you power up the train it is possible that it will continuously play the whistle. And to turn off the transformer and it should reset it self. I have tried this and it still will play the whistle on and off while going forward with throttle past 1/2. and if in neutral will constantly blow the whistle. I have tried to hit the whistle button but it doesn't seem to be stuck.
Is there something I can do to fix this problem? Since its only 2 days old should I bring it back to the hobby store? Any help is appreciated thank you.

All I can find out is that you have an electronic whistle. Two things to check. A good battery or time on the powered track to recharge a battery. The transformer is wired correctly to the track. Third is that you understand the paperwork - manuals. It does work, so if is not something simple to correct, take is back. It does have a waranty.
Here I am limited on information. Normally by reading the manuals you can tell if it is broken.

I thank you for your reply. I tried turning the switch on the tender to the off position (1st day it turned off all sounds). Today it had no effect and the whistle would keep blowing. I am going to call the hobby shop later today and see what they say. I am hoping it is something simple.

I called up the hobby shop, they said to bring it down and they will take care of me. (if I do not write back they "took care of me" ha ha). Since I'm going there I will pick up more track. I would like to make some kind of layout in the furture and look foward to pick up some info that this site will offer. Thanks again.

The hobby shop really helped me out and took it back and gave me a brand new one. At first they said they had to order it but than called another hobby shop and sent me over there to get it so I would have it today. I asked if this has happened to anyone with this train before. He said this is a new NY central and only came out this November so he hasn't heard of this before. But at that same note he only sold one other box and figures it was for a Christmas gift so it hasn't been used yet. I asked the other hobby owner if he had any bad feed back. He said he sold 2 boxes and nothing yet, but they might be Christmas gifts as well.
Hopefully I have better luck with this new train, this is my first experience with Lionel and I want to believe they make a good product.
Thanks again T-Man for your reply.

Now you know it is electronic so follow all written guidance and have fun!.
Starter sets are 130 to 140 in average stores like Target and AC moore. You may snag one of them on the sales day.

I ran the train with out the caboose and it would start to act up again. While in neutral it would blow the whistle like crazy until I hit the bell button. But if I went forward and than back into neutral it would do it again. Once I put the caboose on the track it was fine and everything worked as it should. Any thoughts on why it would do this?

Just a guess but it appears that something A DC pulse is grounding out throught the whistle. With the caboose it has the least resistance and grouns though the light instead. This would be from the center rail to the outer rail. ????????????? All you can do is gp back to all your connection and make sure that no wires are broken or shorting out somewhere.
