I find these websites quite helpful ... the first has a great reference to Lionel stock numbers (locos, cars, etc.), and the second has an in-depth service manual library with hundreds of individual part numbers, exploded-view diagrams, etc.

Also, I've had good success with ordering parts from Jeff Kane at the Train Tender. His website has some nice photo-referenced part lists ...
