i was contacted last week by a gentelman named mark. this set belonged to his father and has been in storage 60+ years. virtual complete set. had to replace all four wheels due to intergranular degeneration (wheel rot), a phenomenon of pot metal. pot metal is made of lead and tin, two dissimilar metals immersed in a liquid become a battery. moisture penetrates the pot metal and electrolysis begins to destroy the casting, the wheels swell, expand and literally turn to powder.

replaced all four wheels with originals, cleaned the armature and brushes and the motor ran first application of power. e unit is working and has the original light bulb in it.

also has early marx one way "automatic" couplers on all of the cars. this is circa 1935 so is 84 years old and is running splendidly.

OH WOW

Wow Ben. You hit the Jackpot with this Marx find. You might consider a trip to your local Casino with this kind of Luck lurking around you. It is a great that this set survived intact & mostly all there. You might consider doing research on this particular Marx set and do a write up on it for posterity purposes. You Tube is nice but a written account goes a long way also.
