I have been pondering on joining a model train club for awhile now and am still sitting on the fence trying to decide if it's something I want to do. Here in Calgary, there are a few choices in clubs. There are clubs that do free-lance, modules and prototype. I went and visited one club that did a free-lance layout and was quite impressed. The layout was huge! They have their own building. Recently I inquired about joining a club that did modules and was informed that their monthly meetings were just mostly planning meetings for upcoming shows.
One of my problems about joining a club is commitment. Because of my work schedule (my shifts rotate every 6 weeks) I can't commit to weekly meetings, but would show up when I can. I have several reasons that I would want to join a club but am curious as to what yours are, so I am going to try a poll.
1. camaraderie ( just like to get together with fellow hobbyists)
2. educational. ( learn something new)
3. Working train sessions
4. Other

Just because you join a club, does not obligate you to attend meetings other than at your convenience. I belonged to several at one time, now none as they have all disbanded or I've moved too far away.

I joined to learn and share. The camaraderie is a bonus. It also gave me a chance to help with the clubs' layouts an hone my skills. A couple had the benefit of shop sponsorship. We were offered discounts at these businesses for belonging to the club. another neat bonus.

Usually these clubs want monthly dues, and that's where my problem mostly exists. I myself have a hard time justifying paying monthly fees when I wont be able to utilize the expense to the fullest. I agree about learning, sharing and honing ones skills though.
