Really?

Life-Like, AHM, Model Power and Roundhouse in the top 10?

:D

Those are all low-end in terms of detail and fidelity (other than the Proto 1000/Proto 2000 lines that Life-Like introduced). And L-L and Roundhouse don't even exist as current brands anymore having been bought by Walthers and Athearn respectively.

Guys, that might be if for one particular scale. But, for O-Gauge it would be, in my opinion:

MTH
3rd Rail/Golden Gate
Lionel
Atlas
Menards
Bachmann WBB
RMT
for trains, and for scenery and all include Woodland Scenics, Artista, etc.

And of course that is just my opinion.

And by the way, when I had a N-layout (over 15 years ago now) I thought Life-Like really sucked. I liked Riverossi and Kato best. Maybe the and everybody else have changed since. Don't know.

Just my opinion.

I believe that every importer has had their share of duds. Intermountain's Cab Forward ten years ago or so. BLI's new P5A, many Bachman diesels years back, and their Spectrum Climaxes and Class J's, MTH's Big Boy about nine years ago....and now the problems with a couple of locomotives that Rapido has recently brought to customers.

I look askance at such lists because they are a moving target with each passing month.

Perhaps you used the wrong word in your post.
Wouldn't "My list of my FAVORITE train brands"
be a good way to describe your thoughts?

As you note from replies to your post, most
every one of us has favorite brands. But in stating
our favorites we are not really saying those are the 'best'.

Never the less, we are very glad to have your
input to the Forum.

well..... L-L does not exist anymore but in my opinion L-L´s run like katos and they have very low maintenance my father has a life like E8A and it stills runs great and it has not been cleaned or maintained in 20+ yrs and they cost like 10-75 $ so, good for someone like me

Yeah, I'd definitely have to disagree. "Best" is one of those weird concepts though. Because of the value judgements involved, no two people will have the same lists.

Price seems important for you -- just because the brands at the top of your list are cheap. Me, I'd rather have fewer, better quality and detailed locos... to a point. After you get north of $300, I start to think that the loco is to valuable to run, and what's the point of that (again, my opinion -- others will vary).

I don't really have a favorite. My stable covers Bachmann, Life-Like (Proto 1K and 2K), Atlas, Athearn, Rapido (ok, that's my spurge, but every NH modeler needs an FL-9), Walthers, and IHC (Mehano).

firescales favorite list:

1 life like
2 bachmann
3 kato
4 model power
5 atlas
6 AHM
7 athern
8 walthers
9 roundhouse models
10 rapido

reflects many of my recent buys - Life-Like (other than Proto 2000), Bachmann (early), Model Power, Athearn (early), AHM (Tempo not Rivarossi) I found to be to be poorly performing and finished engines built down to a price.

Walthers, Kato, Rapido, and Atlas being a step up in all departments.

My favorites list among "affordable" engines would be short. Later Bachmann Spectrums/Hallmarks (who would have thought), Atlas, Proto 2000, and most Rivarossi/Pocher engines.

I have no experience with the more expensive engines but sometime in the future will probably add a couple. Hopefully, I won't be disappointed.
