Haven’t seen a thread on this yet, so I thought I would spread my excitement about receiving the new Legacy N&W J class Locomotive from Lionel. I took a pic and did a short video to show the whistle and whistle steam effect. I was very impressed that the loco worked flawlessly right out of the box. Some critics have complained that the stripe is a bit off, but that does not matter to me. This is a nice locomotive!

I had the pleasure of accidentally seeing the N&W 611 roll through our town of Marshall, VA, several years ago, going to Roanoke VA to be retired. Great stuff.

A local model train store has one for sale and also something they call the "Baby J". I don't know the difference, but the "Baby J" was running on O31 curves.

Nice set you have. Envy.

Stripe - Some just like to complain...
No.... we don't "just like to complain". When I commented on the stripe, I said it was spot on for #746, which was done up as a postwar freight set.

HOWEVER, for folks who pre-ordered 600-series J's to match existing passenger cars they already own, they're in for a disappointment. That's how this discussion should be framed.

The only saving grace for folks who bought the new 600-series J's for passenger service will be if Lionel delivers the Cavalier heavyweight set in a color that matches the locomotive's red stripe. I suspect these cars WILL match (since they're from the same catalog and possibly the same factory), which will be great for folks looking to buy a NEW set of passenger cars. However, that does nothing for folks who already own the Pocahontas, Powhatan Arrow, or other MTH N&W passenger trains.... and wanted a new J with whistle-steam to head up their train.

These little nuances are what make BTO far too risky nowadays. Sometimes, we get pleasant surprises like the #746 air-whistle that brings us back to Lionel postwar days in a heartbeat. But all too often the BTO surprises have been unpleasant disappointments.

Great loco though, Pete.... whichever way you decide to use it... freight or passenger. If the latter, I'd check out the Cavalier heavyweights when they're delivered. Enjoy!!!
