Hey guys I’m pretty new to model railroading. I purchased an old bachmann spectrum k4 from eBay from a guy who picked it up at an estate sale. After running it for about 15 minutes (it ran great btw) I could smell slight burning from the loco when very close to it. It’s old, so I assume it needs to be re-lubricated and cleaned. I’ve never had a train apart so I’m afraid I’m gonna either break something or unscrew something that shouldn’t be touched. I looked at the exploded diagram to see how to take the shell off to expose the motor and gears, but I can’t make heads or tails of it. I think it’s the screw right under the trailing wheels but I want to know for sure before I touch anything. Any help is greatly appreciated

Thanks so much it did load. By looking at that diagram does my theory of the screw underneath the trailing wheels make sense?

It may me a bit more to it than that. See if this helps. Looks like it’s going to depend on if it’s earlier or later version.

Thanks so much for that link. Now I feel like I’m getting somewhere! Based off what was said in that thread. It appears I have a later production k4. So I guess I’ll try the pilot wheel screw and the drawbar screw and go from there
