Kadee cars (and some BLI) are packed in rigid plastic boxes.
The tops are securely locked in place by four side-tabs.
Your first attempts at opening them may result in a fit of exasperation. Trying to pry the slots away won't work.

Place your thumb just below a side-tab, and push inward. It'll release, and pop off.

There ought to be a small instruction sheet included, "how to get this out of the packaging".

Slightly off topic:
With locomotives, there should also be instructions to the effect:
"How to remove the shell from the chassis without breaking anything...";)

The first several boxes I tried opening almost had me ready to throw them across the room (speaking in metaphor).
Now they pop open as easy as a can of beer.
Just one little sticker with "Press here" on it would've saved me a lot of exasperation.
