If you mean making forward reverse and vice versa then just switch the wires to the motor. I'm assuming your dc only because in dcc you can reprogram the decoder.

Two ways common in the hobby for non-DCC operations: flip the reverse switch on your DC controller, or open up the locomotive and reverse the two motor leads.

In DCC, the polarity is reversed most commonly via the throttle.

I totally agree with the above posts but your
question caused me to wonder. Why would you
want to 'reverse the motor' in your Varney diesel?
If it is to pair it with another loco to run as a
consist, there is no need to make any electrical
changes. Just head the loco the opposite direction of
the lead loco...on a DC track both locos will
then run in the same direction. If you are
running a DCC layout, consult your DCC system
manual. It will tell you how to set the decoder
to 'think' FWD is REV.

I've seen some locos where you can merely turn the motor over 180 degrees in order to get it to run the opposite direction. In effect it simply reverses the leads to the motor.

Unable to tell from your picture if this is possible on your loco, though.

Direction control by polarity reversing shall be provided. Positive potential applied to the right hand rail shall produce forward motion

because I don’t want to change the engine position in the frame. The wire was a 30 second fix. Thanks

Still fighting with this locomotive I see.
Looks as though there isnt a second wire from one of the brushes, down to the truck. Meaning contact is through the motor frame on to its respective truck. That said; If the axle gears are centered, you should be able to flip all four wheelsets over. Changing the eletrical pickup from one rail to the other, per truck. That flips the polarity at the brushes.

It is still not clear WHY you want to 'reverse' the
motor. This is a procedure that is usually not
necessary. Your answer would be a great aid
in suggesting a reply.
