One of Rhode Island's quieter citizens, and yet one who was "anonymously famous" throughout the world ... "kissing sailor" George Mendonsa has passed away at the lived-life-fully age of 95.

The photo is iconic, and it was only years after that George was firmly identified as the exuberant sailor who took Celebration into his own hands ... literally.

Thank you, George, for your service during WWII, and for embracing hope and freedom with a smile and a kiss. You will be remembered. You will be missed.

RIP George. I remember as a young lad looking at the picture. Our WW2 vets are truly the greatest generation of which both my parents were members of and who served. God bless them all.
