Just curious. I have re-purchased.

I had this Santa Fe observation car in storage a few years in a commercial cardboard storage box along with the rest of the set.

I glanced through the box and noticed this paint failure. The factory paint just disintergrated down to the base, and it smeared with my fingertip.

The rest of the box was fine, like I expected.

Any ideas

Wow that’s odd, never seen that happen before, I’ve stripped the paint from Rivarossi models before and found it very difficult to get off, but never had anything do this

The paint and lettering would smudge like lip stock. After sitting overnight, it turned hard again.

Somebody said it could have been unfriendly foam.

Perhaps the red paint was added along with lettering, and you bought it 2nd hand..
Now the original Pennsy (Brunswick?) green is coming through; the red disintegrating..
I have 2 of those Rivs and they are green..I think Riv didn't/doesn't even offer them in red, meaning it could likely have been painted over (and maybe wasn't prepped correctly first, or some such).
