I see Roundhouse has a series of GP40-2 locomotives that are DCC ready and fit my budget.

Anyone have any idea of their quality? I don't care about detail. I'm wondering how good of a runner they are.

They are the low end Athearn line, equivalent to Walthers Trainline and Atlas Trainman locos. Normally, they run ok but have very limited and generic detailing.

Although they might be considered 'low end', their diesels do have fairly good detail, (e.g., handrails) albeit below the standard RTR line.
My issue with them is the price... not much lower than the RTR models on LHS shelves, which by comparison are superbly detailed.

My Athearn RTR SD40R was $89 w/sound, on sale.
I'm sure you can find a Dash-2 at a good price also.
Plus, I'm willing to bet there's more Dash-2's in LHS inventory than any other locomotive.

[Edit]:
Sorry, I misread "GP40-2" as "SD40-2"
