C. Midland started a thread about the demise of the cottage industry guys that serve our hobby. This thread gives rise to the question as to how important is scenery to you and your layout?

For us, scenery is a huge factor that enhances the enjoyment of the hobby. Let's use the theatrical community as an example. You go to a play and on stage are just the actors. No backdrops, no scenery, no nothing put the actors. They may be the most eloquent of their lot, but boring!!! But add to the play backdrops, scenery, and props and you have a lot more interest. Our trains are the actors and without scenery, they can get boring as well.

Beautiful trains deserve a beautiful setting and that is created be scenery.

What's your take.

Richard E ...

Nice pic of the O&W F units.

I actually ran engines on former O&W trackage when I was younger, right in Middletown (New York), by the old station/offices there.

We used to park the engine by the yard office at Wisner Avenue, and walk down to the diner for coffee.

Then we'd go down and exchange cars with the Middletown & New Jersey railroad, then head north through the O&W Middletown yard, and get back onto the Conrail Southern Tier line at Four Story Junction.

There's a picture of the Campbell Hall local coming up the connection from the Eri to the O&W main (with me running the engine) in Trains magazine ("The Old Woman Lives), December 1985, page 54.

Found it!
