I have a Walthers 50' Center Beam Flat Car that I bought without couplers. I am having some problems figuring out what kind of coupler boxes or box covers I need to complete the car. I am planning on using horn hook couplers on this. What should I be looking for? Can anybody help me out on this one?

Hi Prof7749,
Welcome to the Forum. Do you have a LHS nearby that you do business with? Ask them or contact Walthers directly to get coupler covers. I know they have Horn Hook in supply because I just replaced my old ones on my fleet of 50ft. D&RGW Box cars. I should assume that the flatcar is from a Kit. I know for a fact that they have couplers in the Reference guide...but mine is old 2008 and I just checked my walthersa Jan flyer and there are Proto box couplers/knuckle couplers in it. Anyway...if you look to update go to the Kadee website...they have a conversion chart that is very helpful. Good luck!

Did you buy the car new or used? Because Walthers has a phone number you can call for missing parts.

I have three Walthers bulkhead flar cars..all of which came with magnetic knuckle couplers. One of them also came with horn hooks if I wanted to change.

The instruction sheet says that the screw used for holding the coupler box together is M2 x 2 Pan head and flat coupler box cover.

I agree, looks like a good to to convert to Kadees. However, I must say that a friend of mine converted several years ago. It cost him a fair sum.

If you already have horn hooks, and don't see the need to change, don't. But Kadees work better, look more realistic, and give better performance. But, if you already have a bunch of cars using horn hooks, by all means continue.

Yes Bob it does cost but if you choose to change over you can always do a car that has Horn/Hook on one end and Kadee on the other which would permit the use of both. Also you can buy the yearly variety pack which works out cheaper and allows the change to take place over the course of a year.
But Horn/Hook do work so as Bob has stated feel free to continue use of them.
I'm not a Rivet counter by any means however I would like the couplers to look prototypical and work well also; so Kadee is the way I'm going at it.
Just FYI
Another option is Sargent Couplers which really look good even better than Kadee but are even more expensive though

Here is also a link where the Horn/Hook Coupler parts can be obtained
