You need to play with Diodes. Assuming the engines are simple with no DCC components. Each engine will run off one diode . Its like the bell and whistle signal in O gage. You still need two controllers and reversing is disabled on the engines.
Is it worth it?
Only one engine runs on command control with no DCC you will have two.
You also have the block system too.
Just have two different loops connected with switches each with it's own power and run the engines from one to the other.
I say keep it simple for now.
