GRJohn - hum! , a logical wrench into my plans - like the moth it was the "lights" that snared me

i like the idea of lights - poles with NO lights - much eraser

back to the drawing board

but

just - how far apart

thanks - MrToad

This is very rough but I think rural poles would be about 100 ft. apart.
Take 1/48 of that. If my math is right, about 2 ft apart for your layout.

Poles might be 80 ft apart so a little less than 2 ft. Do what looks best.

Not everything on our layouts is to scale.

In the country most utility poles are 150 to 400 feet spacing depending on the utility and area geography. 150 feet is about 3 feet at 1:48 and is what i try to replicate. In a town the poles are closer together typically, of course.

I guess it depends on what the country/rural area looks like. All your really small towns have street lights on wooden poles. Small factories or businesses have them too. They give that "country look" to the area in my opinion. If you grew up in a small Midwestern town like I did, wooden poles with lights looks exactly right.

Concerning spacing, whatever looks right to you. If the buildings are spaced out, have one by each building and add one in the middle in between if they are far enough apart. A couple feet apart sounds about right to me in town and maybe three feet apart in the country.

I worked for the telephone company, for 41 years, and typical spacing on poles, were 125' to 150'. A lot depended on what was attached to the pole line, to account for the sag in the heavy cables attached. The standard poles were 35' poles set 6' deep, but with the Power companies, the poles are being replaced with 65' poles, and the power lines, are getting increased power, from what was the norm. The spacing for O scale, would be in the 2.5" to 3" range, on your layout.:smilie_daumenpos:
