It certainly makes them distinctive. Just make sure you're not using rare and valuable coins!!

Added another one. These boiler doorless locos just find their way to my model railroad.

Rivarossi Light Pacific "President Washington." A nickel glued inside a Washington quarter providing a cementing base and it fit just fine.

Didn't come with a tender but I have the same one in a different road name. Will suffice until I find a proper replacement or until I paint his one. Loco runs fine.

Major investment. Got almost a buck tied up in these.

A buddy of mine is casting his own boiler doors for his Rivs that are missing them.

I'll point him this way.
I was thinking 3D printing with plastics. Seems many engines are missing boiler doors, Rivarossi in particular. I have a few more where coins won't fit.

Maybe something foreign, Chinese coins already have holes in them..

rsv1ho, if you'll post the Rossi models, I can see if I have
already made molds for these fronts. I currently have fronts
for the 4-4-0 and 2-4-0 locos produced by Rossi.
I will have to dig them all out, but going from memory and the picture above they are the 0-8-0/0-6-0/0-4-0 switchers, the light Pacific, and the 4-4-0 Reno. Bowkers too but they are available.

It would have been better to have used old silver coins. :p
