A friend of mine allowed me to show this photo in RR forums around, what he made this year January, when he drove a rural commutter train and went shortly out ahead his loco on station halt for peeing.

Some lost "End of Train" sighns are collected onto this tree or bush alongside the tracks.

As MichaelE has poste, I think you forgot to add a photo/video into your post. Otherwise your posting makes no sense.

On sidings of teamtracks sometimes will be forgotten to equip the end of train with new marker sighns. The RR Coupling crews laying down all not needed things alongside the tracks.
One RR man hanged all the collected End of Train markers into a tree.

The modern End of Train sighns have reflecting materials and if any train engineer see it into short distance of the headlights than there is the big panic onto locomotives but by more than one or two of them it is not the problem...

Freight trains have those sighn in minimum on to right side or even onto both sides above the buffers.

A fast moving train cannot be stopped behind another train, when this sighn would be suddenly visible for the Engineer.
