How do you get the train to stay on the track?

The power supply depends more on the trains you will be running (and your budget) than on the track length. Older locos and passenger cars with incandescent lighting draw more power than modern locos and passenger cars with LED lighting. Lionel post war transformers can be had for reasonable prices, but you will need to add circuit protection if you are running modern locos with circuit boards.
