As a lot of us do, I try to make my own trees using armatures, hobbe-e-tac and clump foliage. I brush the tac on, let it dry clear and then press on the clump foliage. I shake off any cling-ons (not star trek variety) and that's it. It seems though after sitting for a while the trees start molting clumps onto the ground. I've tried misting them with diluted white glue but that just seems either to make the clumps heavier and drop faster or does nothing at all. Bare spots on the trees looks goofy and having to always pick up clumps from under the trees doesn't pay this forestry worker much.
Any of you have any suggestions or am I doing this screwy???

I tried the clump foliage for trees recently, but got frustrated for similar reasons. My fingers weren't that small, my patience wasn't that big.

Instead, I opted to use some real branches (bushes from the back yard), and then hot-glued on clusters of lichen, starting with the lower brances and working my way up.

Decent results, I think. Perhaps not as convincing for real leaves as the clump foliage, but a lot easier on the patience.

Some examples here:

Good luck!

They look pretty decent to me TJ. I may have to try one with lichen and hot glue.. Don't know if there will be a mismatch with the clump trees but I'll find out.

I tried the glue gun way, and they look much better than using hobb-e-tac.
A tip for anyone new. Buy the low temp glue gun and glue. That way your tree limbs won't melt or curl. Hobby Lobby sell both cheap.

trees

I collect small branches (fit for HO scale) then glue on clump foliage with hot glue. Then I sprinkle on a light coat of ground foam and spray the tree with scenic cement.

You can Sharpen the ends of the trunks and stick them right into a foam scenery base such as pink foam if you use one. This is easy and it looks great.
