Three of them were handed 12-month referral orders and their parents were also ordered to pay £500 in compensation.

Is that about 450USD?

Well, 500 in compensation times four offenders equals 2,000 pounds ...
and the damage was around 30,000 pounds ....
Somehow the numbers don't match up at all ..

unless I read it wrong ??

You read it correctly. The compensation is a fraction of the total damage they inflicted. The good news is that the club will be receiving donations in excess of their losses. Any extra will go to charity.

What are 12 month referral orders ?...
"A referral order is an order available for young offenders who plead guilty to an offence whereby the young offender is referred to a panel of two trained community volunteers and a member of the youth offending team. It can be for a minimum of three months and a maximum of twelve months."
