I assumed that Version 5 was a newer, and therefore improved, decoder.

Perhaps it is not?

You have two more channels of sound available, but how many are you going to be using at once?

Prime mover sound
Intermittent horn & bell
Brake squeal
Exhaust fans
Compressor
Crew announcement(s)
Curve Squeal

That leaves three unused channels unless the decoder has more sounds loaded. And that assumes you would be needing all ten channels at once. I don't think I've ever had more than four or five sounds going at once, and that would just be at departure or arrival at a station stop.

Michael,

Thank you very much! I am just starting work on my first layout, so all of this is new to me....as you can see, I don't always know the correct question to ask!

Your answer was exactly what I needed to know.

Ken;

I'm glad Michel was able to help you with your question. Since you're new, you might want to read through our "Beginner's Q&A" section, if you haven't already. There is a lot of good info available in that section.

Good luck & have fun!
