Make those old dogs roll great
With three ingredients.

If you want to upgrade old or vintage rolling stock, (or any cars with plastic wheels) into top shelf rollers, these steps will produce impressive results.
If you upgrade enough of your cars, it could even allow your locomotives to pull more of them.
I have Accurail, Tyco, Varney, old Athearn BB, and TrainMiniature cars that float effortlessly.

YOU'LL NEED THREE INGREDIENTS:
1.) Accurail or Tichy trucks (or quality original trucks).
2.) A TruckTuner (available at MicroMark).
3.) Metal wheelsets *.

Accurail trucks are available in bulk, and in several types and colors. Tichy has older archbars in black.
The TruckTuner tool is simple to use, and can greatly increase rolling performance.
Quality metal wheelsets are available from a half dozen manufacturers, but InterMountain *, Tangent, ExactRail, and Kadee are the most popular. They're sold in 12-packs, plus 50 and 100-count bags.

1.) If you want weathered truckframes, this is the best time to dress them up with dirt, grime, or rust.
Before metal wheelsets are installed, brush-on your weathering colors, and let them dry thoroughly. Shoot them with DullCote to seal them.
2.) Use the TruckTuner tool to smooth-out any burrs or casting imperfections in the axle bearing cones.
3.) Install metal wheelsets *, and slap the trucks on cars.
Voila!

I can guarantee that your cars will roll as good as (or better than) any premium brand car you can buy. They'll glide like a curling stone.

* Lately I've been using InterMountain wheelsets. They're excellent quality, and I'm finding them discounted more often.

BTW, if you weather or paint the wheels...
Keep paint off axle points and treads!
Otherwise you'll negate the benefits.

This ridiculous looking Rivarossi model needs some weathering to make it look decent.
But it's one of the best rollers I have.

Accurail, TrainMiniature, and Athearn BB.
All 'super-rollers'.
