As I opened up the O Gauge section of this forum this morning I noticed there were 230 viewers. Seemed like a lot for 5:42 AM ET. When I went over to the new OGF forum to check out any new info on the upcoming Lionel catalog, there were 4 viewing. I assume both numbers are accurate.

Does OGR ever show viewers at any certain time ? It would seem that OGR would even have a significantly larger number based on their membership. For me I usually will check out a few forums when on-line to see what is happening in the O Gauge world.

right now its 5am local ... and there are 14 members online ...
but there are 1622 'guests' ...
guests do include members who haven't logged in, ones that aren't members. just here to read the posts, and robots, that search for new stuff ..
what it means is that there are 1622 people [and robots] online now that CAN'T post ..on this post there is just me and three guests,

Spence, not necessarily that people rise early since the internet is worldwide and forum viewers visiting djring our early EST time might be viewing during their much later local time. (There are many model railroaders in Great Britian and during our early EST time it is mid morning in the UK.)

It may also be a case that people don’t log off when they are not viewing the forum. I figure as long as you don’t log out, you are still counted even when you are not here. I never log out, here and other forums.

Just a bad guess...

For my admin rights I can click the "active users" and a display showing what you are watching appears.

Most of them seem realistic but then some like viewing pages with "no permission to view"

I stay logged on and may even have a few pages open at the same time.

I think that here is is a "in the last day" number and on OGR it is "in the last 15 minutes" I recall talking to someone about that at OGR a nunmber of years ago.

That's the number that actually currently has a page open. However, you could stay logged in and not really be looking at it.

As for logging out, the forum automatically decides you're not here after 15 minutes of inactivity. So, the counts will be reflect anyone that's been active in the last 15 minutes.

NIGHT OWL HERE

A good bit of my working years was on the 3:30 pm to midnight shift. So I became a Night Owl out of necessity. Now that I am retired old habits do die hard. I still stay up way later after everyone else in the house is sound asleep. That is when I do my MTF reading, postings, replying etc. There may be others who do their MTF browsing in the same time frame as I do. This could account for some of the early odd hour accountings you witnessed. Early hours may have accounted for some of the poorly worded replies by yours truly caused by sleep deprivation. :D:D

LATER "UH" EARLIER??? WHATEVER! :confused::confused::confused:

I can't recall ever being logged out automatically. There's that little box next to the log in credentials "Remember Me".

I don't think John meant that we are "logged out automatically"..... He just said that the board monitors activity, and if after 15 minutes you are inactive, it does not include you in the statistics at that point in time.....

And if that's right, there's no way of really accurately knowing how many members are doing what at any given time....which makes absolutely no difference to me and in no way hinders my enjoyment of the forum in any way, shape or form, so.....why are we discussing this still? :eek:hwell:
