I still feel like a kid at Christmas when Lionel releases their new catalog. I have avoided the other sites and all their posts and spoilers. Why ruin it I ask.

I'll flip through making mental notes and then probably flip through again.

I've been in this hobby long enough to know, some things are cancelled, some are very late, some go horribly wrong. Regardless of what I see, I do realize there will be nothing in there I HAVE to have. Just a whole bunch of that would be nice!

Hope you enjoy perusing the catalog as much as I will!

It's up. I went through it. Top thing I noticed is the huge expansion of themed and licensed product. Heck there's even a star trek set!

I also noticed a big banner for HO Spring 2020. So a continued push there. Other than this to me at least I didn't see anything dramatic exactly.

But an impressive showing none-the-less.

Can’t say I look forward to the Lionel catalog release with great excitement. The main reason I look through it is to remind me why I prefer MTH. Although the tank engine and the hopper 6-pack are kind of interesting.

Just did my first run through. WOW, there's lots of stuff in there. First thought, nothing really jumped out at me. We'll see what happens the second or third time through.

The catalog is big enough to choke a horse! However, a huge chunk of it is dedicated to the RTR stuff with ever cartoon character known to man represented. Lionel must have invested in some photo technology to allow them to print all these different patterns cheaply on the same tired old cheap boxcars!

John, recall the video that was done a few months ago at the Lionel facility in Concord. They have two "paintjet printers" (my term). It has inkjet printer resolution but uses paint.
Very cool. I wonder what those things cost?

I am guessing they are common at the factories in China. I have been wondering how MTH is able to get such fine detail on their graphics these days. Pretty sure its well beyond the capabilities of pad printing.

While Lionel may have an efficient manufacturing mechanism for producing many variations of the same model via painting, that's not the only consideration. Down stream, the retailers have to stock the product. More variations means more inventory.

I wonder if Lionel has it's sights set on "demand production"? Produce extra unadorned cars and wait to see which versions are hot sellers. Then finish the final painting to meet demand. Though I'm not sure that can work with China souring.

Of course, with mostly E-tailing (Amazon, the larger train vendors, etc.) there's more concentration of the "point-of-sale".

In the case of BTO the dealers don't have to stock anything that their customers haven't already ordered. A few do order extras but thats their choice. The majority of dealers buy from distributors, not direct from Lionel and only order what they think they can sell or a customer wants.
