i'm trying to get a idea on something i'm prob. going to buy tomorrow. locally there is a 4-6-2 mantua metal pacific in the original box from the 80s in excellent condition for sale, along with 5 matching santa fe heavyweight passenger cars in ho scale. i'm not possitive of the makers of passenger cars, could be ihc, riverossi or athern.

anyways everything looks to be in great shape, a idea of what this is worth would be nice? even if it's a ballpark guess.

It is VERY subjective.
On the notorious auction site i see the Mantua Pacific locos all over the place price wise.
The ones up for bid start at about $20.
There are some under "Buy it now" at about $115+

Used passenger cars---AHM/Rivarossi/IHC or Athearn,,Anything over $10 per car is too high, IMHO.

As for me, i am always very leary of buying used locos, especially Steam, from an era known for cracking axles in steam locos.

Ask to see it run on a test track first.

i'm paying 40 for the engine and passenger cars. these mantua locos are metal axles. i've owned 3 or 4 that were abused pretty good and the drivetrain was still fine. i rebuilt all of them. this one he says hasn't really ever been used.

well i bought it, loco looks like it's never been ran, i don't see any rings on the shiny wheels. passenger cars are athearn , there in ok condition. the rear car is missing the ledge hand rails, a couple steps are broken. etc... engine is in excellent condition though.

thanks. i've ordered a few parts from them, they are great people to deal with. i am curious who all has ordered there smoke unit conversion and how well it worked?
