I was checking under the layout the other day to see what I had stored there. This is a partial list of what I have.
4 boxes of 1:43 die cast; about 100 vehicles.
3 Pepsi & 3 Goodyear trucks on flatcars.
1 box of 36 trees.
1 box (8) weathered CN boxcars.
1 box (4) BNSF 15” flatcars.
1 box (4) Alaska “. “.
1 box (7) 15” flatcars.
This is all from Menards. They have cost me a lot of money 💰 .

When I do build my layout, I will have many empty train boxes stored under there with some boxes of trains that I will not be running at the time.

I hope to keep it exclusive to layout related stuff but I have a funny feeling that holiday decorations will find their way under there...

Who knows, is all I can say. Around 30 plastic tubs of freight cars & passenger cars from decades ago. Prewar, Postwar, MPC, Williams, Early MTH, Early Atlas, Weaver, K-Line, and layout stuff that I have forgotten about. When I dig out a tub its like Christmas, that tub may not have been opened for 10 to 15 years. Only locomotives buried in the archives are Prewar & Postwar O Gauge and a few Standard Gauge.

The tubs are all labeled so I kinda know what type of product is in the tub but not the exact product. As an example the tub label would say Lionel Postwar or K-Line freight cars or MTH Northern Pacific passenger cars.

Great thread Spence.

The main layout is only a foot off the attic floor, so stored items have to have a short height. On one side of the U-shaped layout is mostly Christmas decorations with some train stuff. On the other side is empty train boxes. The train room annex/staging area has a smaller footprint, but is 4’ off the floor so I have train storage cabinets and a desk under it.

Not sure if there is a recommended size. For me it is the largest available, clear not colored so I can see inside, and straight sides not the rounded that you lose bottom space.

We are still in the building phase so screws, air compressor, shop vacs, etc. Also a generator and pressures washer.

Train stuff includes 12 boxes of buildings that we built and others purchased elsewhere. Also a 36” turntable from Al. Should be installed in the next few months.

The train room has a large second floor and that has 150 or so Dept 56 buildings in original boxes, 50 years of assorted fishing tackle/boat stuff, and a ton of O gauge boxes, about half with the contents inside. Most of the engines are below but rolling stock, etc is here.

The attic to the house has enough 027/conventional O to equip a medium size layout, much of it unopened. It is too much trouble to move it to the train room.

Besides a lot of layout construction materials and tools, I have eight display cases with my diecast collection (almost all 1/18 scale) under my layout. Behind the display cases are all the empty boxes from the diecast. Underneath the 10' x 13' portion of my layout, where the turntable is, I have all my boxed trains stored along with the empty boxes for the trains currently on the layout.

Interesting thread. I have all my empty train boxes under mine. I just thought that is where you are supposed to put them? I used to save all my empty boxes, but have since thrown away all track, building, and assorted boxes and only keep engines and cars empty boxes.
