I got an e-mail from someone called lehua768 on Friday. June 11, 2010. and it 's a compilation of three posts , one by me on the 14th of May, one by tj on the same day, and one by therailchannel on the eighteenth of May. What gives ? Anybody know how or why? I couldn't find anyone in the different threads with that moniker. Am I being spammed? Is this a joke on a not-too-computer-savvy oldtimer? The legitimate posts are on the "What scale(s) do you model" thread.

Oldsteamer,

Yeah ... spam ... somehow, a few days ago, some spam engine in internet-land was generating posts here on the forum that were a compilation of 3 or 4 other (legitamate) posts, but with some buy-this spam babble on the bottom.

Since you were subscribed to the parent thread (for updated post notifications), the spammer's "post" got forwarded on to you ... and anyone else subscribed to that thread.

Same spammer hit 4 or 5 threads, if I recall.

Pretty shitty that us honest folk have to deal with garbage like that. Hope no real harm was done on your end.

Cheers,

TJ

Agreed. Since I tend to hit the forum early, I've taken to posting a big, red "BUMP SPAM" after every spam I run across. Since it takes the spam out of the most-recent-post position in the thread, the spam gets fewer readers and I feel I've accomplished something for the day. *L* I like to think it also p*sses the spammer off.

Reck,

In case you didn't see it, B&M posted a brief note a day or two ago requesting that members here do NOT post "bump spam" messages ... makes clearing out the garbage a bit more difficult on his end (?).

Thanks for the quick response to my call for help, guys. And I'm sure glad to know B&M is on top of these spammers. This was the first time I ran into anything like that, but when something smells odd, it raises questions, and I learned something new today. Cheers.

I have decided to nip-it-in-the-bud before it starts getting out of hand... For one, people have been "spam bumping" the thread with SPAM in it, rather than a different thread in the forum (as T-Man did)... Plus, not everyone around here knows what is going on, and the "spam bump" poster would probably have to repeatedly explain it as it is not a ususal thing found on forums...

B & M, I think I speak for everyone when I say we're willing do to whatever makes the job easier for you. I do have a question on the topic. I tend to be an early riser and see the weekly spam insertions pretty early, as a result. Is there anything I can do to help eliminate them sooner? I guess they aren't really a big issue, but I just like the thought of interfering with the poster. It's on the order of seeing someone stuffing advertising under windshield wipers at the store and taking the time to gather a bunch of his waste-paper and shoving it up the tailpipe of his car. So....any way I can help?

B&M,

Makes sense. I've used the "Report Post" icon/link in the lower left, which presumably goes directly to you. Often, a spammer will "hit" simulataneously in 3 or 4 different threads. Is it sufficient for us to "Report Post" on just one thread, or should we do that for each of the threads?

I like how you are trying to help Reck, but the majority of spammers are not actual humans... There are programs out there that can automatically sign up on forums and post a prewritten message... So, there really is no way to interfere with them as a bots have no feelings...

Yes, those messages go to me and TwoRail... It is sufficient to just flag one post per spammer since I can delete everything at once :)
