FEC can make this work because their "fleet" consists of only 24 locomotives, and the distance they have to run is limited (in comparison to how far an engine might travel on, say, Union Pacific).

The original article states that the engines are not 100% gas-powered. There is still a small amount of diesel fuel mixed in with the gas (about 10%) to "ignite the mix" via compression/ignition. If it was 100% gas, some kind of spark plug in the cylinders would be needed.

I don’t know about that….looks like that well car has end handrails, and probably has some specialized piping to get the LNG to the locomotives…..
