Last fall I picked up an old American Flyer Transformer in a lot. I tried it out and it buzzed like a mad bee. Ok a few mad bees. Today I took a second look at it and noticed the metal plates to the coil vibrate when current is applied. The only support was two screws holding the bottom plate on.
What I did was drill four holes with a drill press and tied the plates with a number 8 screws. I didn't have any smaller size in one inch length. It was enough to stop the vibration and the noise in now a very low hum. The only problem is when the dial is off the train keeps rolling. Something to do another day.
