I have two 6026W whistles... They are exactly the same, but one of them has a long, rectangular metal piece running down the center of the brush plate and the other one does not... What is it for and is the one that does not have it actually missing it?

Hello B&M,

The brush plate with the metal rectangle is for a oil wick - replenish oil supply to armature to reduce friction (Which means the tender doesn't have to be oil as often).

The other brush plate is a more common plate. It just has a hole in the center, where the armature head is; the hole is for oil.

So basically, both plates are just different oil feeding techniques that Lionel made in the postwar era.
