HO track compatibility

I bought a Piko HO set yesterday. The tracks look like Atlas track (no plastic base, everything the same length), but I couldn't connect them.

It turns out that Atlas HO track rails are a little bit higher.

Meanwhile, it runs great. Whenever I get back there, I'll have to buy four more Bachman straight tracks so I can keep everything together.

What rail code is the Atlas and Piko track?

There are specialty rail joiners that will allow two different rail codes to be used together. There are also short sections of transitional track that will allow both to be used.
