I purchased a rail king 30-4073-1 beautiful John Deere O gauge set, new and unopened, from a local collector’s estate sale. He had quite the collection of model trains.

I grew up on old Marx O gauge. So I was excited to break the seal on this set and get it running around the Christmas tree. I snapped the tracks together, plugged in the transformer and figured out the remote to turn on the light/power. This is my first MTH. I put the engine on the track and toggled the remote up. The track indicating light came on and a small noise came from the engine. I kept toggling the up button to see it go, the sound got louder but then magic smoke came out of the engine :(. I am used to the old Marx trains that really make a grinding sound when powering up, so I thought it was normal not seeing movement and hearing some noise. Upon pulling it off of the track, I found the powered wheels seemed locked up completely.

Is the unit toast? Do you think the powered unit was frozen from being stored 20+ years with no use?? The old Marx ones we had were way older!!

There is a 9v style battery to keep the sound & electronics on when the power is interrupted for direction changes. The battery is an 8.4 volt NiMH rechargeable battery, you can use a regular 9 volt temporarily to test but the rechargeable (or BCR from J&W Electronics) is required for permanent operation.
